How to Clean and Maintain a Mattress Without Damaging It

How to Clean and Maintain a Mattress Without Damaging It

A mattress is a layered product, so a method that cleans the outer fabric can still damage what is underneath. Start with the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model. Removable covers, foam cores and one-sided mattresses need different treatment.

  • A zip does not necessarily mean a cover is washable.
  • Do not soak, steam or dry-clean a mattress core unless its manufacturer explicitly permits the method.
  • Finish drying before replacing bedding, and flip or rotate only as instructed.

Identify what can actually be cleaned

Find the model and care label before opening a cover or applying a product. Check whether the cover is removable, its washing conditions and any instruction not to remove an inner cover. If the label is missing, ask the supplier instead of assuming that ordinary upholstery instructions apply.

For example, TEMPUR UK: product care and cleaning restrictions says its TEMPUR material cannot be washed, sponged, steam-cleaned or dry-cleaned. That is a product-specific restriction, and illustrates why a generic “deep clean every mattress” recipe is unsuitable.

  • Keep the construction, cleaning restriction and warranty information with your care notes.
  • Photograph the label before asking a cleaning company for advice.
  • Describe whether a spill stayed on the cover or may have entered deeper layers.

Clean bedding, protectors and permitted covers separately

Strip the bed and wash the bedding and protector according to their own labels. Remove a mattress cover only if its instructions allow it, follow the stated wash and dry conditions, and refit it only when fully dry. A damp cover can leave moisture trapped against the mattress.

TEMPUR UK: mattress and removable-cover cleaning distinguishes washable covers from exceptions containing TEMPUR material. Do not apply one model’s wash temperature to another cover simply because both have a zip.

Handle a small spill without driving it deeper

  1. Absorb liquid with a clean white towel without spreading it across the bed.
  2. Check whether any spot cleaning of the outer surface is permitted and which product may be used. If not, stop and contact the manufacturer.
  3. Where a local treatment is allowed, use the smallest directed amount and avoid wetting the filling. Test first and stop if the surface changes.
  4. Leave the area uncovered to dry in the conditions recommended for that mattress. Do not judge deep dryness from the cover alone.

Blood, urine and sweat marks are different problems. Use the relevant blood, urine or sweat-stain guide with the model’s instructions taking priority. Do not turn a small spot into a soaked mattress while trying successive recipes.

A practical mattress-maintenance routine

  • Use a compatible mattress protector and clean it when needed, following its label.
  • Air the bed as the manufacturer recommends and keep the base’s ventilation routes clear.
  • Remove accessible dry debris from permitted outer surfaces using only the approved method or vacuum attachment.
  • Inspect for dampness after spills and resolve a room moisture problem rather than relying on scent.
  • Rotate only if instructed. Do not flip a one-sided mattress onto its comfort surface.

Baking soda and fragrance are not a general disinfection system. Read the limitations in our baking-soda mattress article before adding powder, and do not use essential oil as a substitute for removing the cause of an odour.

When to ask for an assessment

Seek advice for a soaked core, recurring odour, visible mould, extensive contamination or an unknown construction. Ask the manufacturer whether cleaning is permitted and whether replacement is the more appropriate option. A cleaner cannot promise to repair damaged foam or remove contamination from every layer.

For a memory-foam mattress, check its particular restrictions. Give Crown the model and label information before requesting a treatment, so suitability can be confirmed rather than assumed.

Ask whether your mattress is suitable for cleaning

Send the model, care label and spill history before a method is agreed.
