How to Care for a Memory-Foam Mattress Without Soaking the Core

“Memory foam” does not identify one cleaning procedure. The outer cover, fire barrier, foam layers and adhesives can have different restrictions. Find the exact care instructions before removing a cover, vacuuming the foam or applying any liquid.
- A zip does not establish that a cover is removable or washable.
- Do not steam, extract or sponge a foam core unless its manufacturer permits that exact method.
- Keep the mattress out of use while damp or while contamination remains unresolved.

- Identify the cover and core separately
- Routine care without a wet recipe
- After a fresh spill
- If liquid has entered the core
Identify the cover and core separately
TEMPUR UK: cover care and foam-material restrictions states that its TEMPUR Material must not be washed, sponged, dry cleaned or steam cleaned, while some product covers have separate washing instructions. This does not establish the rules for every other foam brand; it establishes why the exact model matters.
- Find the brand, model and care leaflet, including any warranty restrictions.
- Check whether a zip is for maintenance access rather than customer cover removal.
- Leave internal barriers and protective layers in place unless the instructions explicitly permit removal.
- Ask the manufacturer if the label is missing or the proposed cleaner conflicts with its guidance.
Routine care without a wet recipe
Wash bedding and any approved removable protector separately. Air the bed as the manufacturer directs and check for condensation or other moisture around its base. Rotate or turn the mattress only if its construction allows it.
If vacuuming is permitted, use the specified gentle attachment and settings. Do not use a powered brush on exposed foam or scatter powder on it by default. The bicarbonate guide explains why deodorising advice is conditional.
After a fresh spill
- Remove wet bedding without spreading the liquid to an unaffected area.
- Blot accessible liquid gently with a clean absorbent cloth. Do not push it into the foam.
- Use the maker’s spill instructions. If they prohibit sponging or damp cleaning, do not proceed with a homemade spray.
- Wash an approved removable cover only on its own label’s settings. Do not let this wet the core.
- Keep the item uncovered in suitable airflow while any permitted treatment dries.
Do not mix soda and vinegar in a spray bottle, pour detergent into the mattress or use direct high heat to speed drying. An improvised spray cannot account for the core construction, material restrictions or liquid already absorbed.
If liquid has entered the core
Ask the manufacturer what can be done before booking extraction. Explain the liquid, quantity, time elapsed and any products already used. A dry-feeling cover does not confirm that the inside is dry or free of contamination.
Persistent odour, mould, degraded foam or contamination that cannot be safely treated may make replacement appropriate. A professional clean should not be offered as an automatic rescue for every foam mattress. See the general mattress guide for the wider care checklist.
Ask for a material-specific cleaning assessment
Provide the exact model and care restrictions before requesting a quote. Crown must confirm method compatibility; some foam products are unsuitable for the cleaning service.
