Pen Marks on a Leather Sofa: Identify the Finish Before Treatment

Pen Marks on a Leather Sofa: Identify the Finish Before Treatment

Leather ink removal depends on the finish as well as the ink. A protected pigmented surface, an absorbent aniline hide and nubuck cannot be treated as the same material. A product that removes a pen mark may also remove colour or coating, so identification comes first.

  • Find the leather description and care instructions.
  • Keep the pen details and record earlier attempts.
  • Do not leave vinegar or alcohol on the surface as a default ink treatment.

Identify the finish and its condition

Check the retailer or manufacturer’s material description, including whether the item is genuine leather or an imitation. Inspect for peeling, cracking, fading or previous repair. Photograph these separately from the pen mark.

The Prochem: a leather-cleaner specification limited to pigmented smooth hides limits a particular leather cleaner to pigmented smooth hides and excludes aniline. This illustrates a real restriction; it is not a recommendation to copy that product procedure onto every sofa.

Handle fresh ink without spreading it

Blot accessible fresh liquid gently with a plain soft cloth. Do not scrub, press ink into stitching or wipe it across clean leather. If the surface is absorbent, avoid adding water without approved guidance.

Once the loose ink is absorbed, obtain the finish-specific instructions. A home test on the visible mark is not a safe way to discover what leather you own.

Ink products still need compatibility checks

  • Confirm that the product is intended for the exact leather finish, not just described as an ink remover.
  • Test out of sight and inspect after the stated time and drying.
  • Keep application local, following quantity and removal directions.
  • Stop for colour transfer, altered sheen, stickiness or surface change.

Do not substitute vinegar, alcohol, hairspray or nail-polish remover. A failed attempt can turn a local mark into a finish-restoration job.

Cleaning versus restoration

Ask whether the proposed work can remove the deposit while retaining the finish, or whether colour repair is likely. Staining that has penetrated an absorbent leather may remain.

For fabric use the fabric-sofa guide. Crown must confirm whether the leather and problem are within its service scope; specialist restoration should be agreed separately.

Discuss the appropriate cleaning scope
