Ink on a Fabric Sofa: Choose the Next Step by Ink and Care Code

Ink on a Fabric Sofa: Choose the Next Step by Ink and Care Code

An ink mark on a sofa needs two identifications: the ink and the upholstery. Ballpoint, felt-tip and printer ink are not one stain, and a method that moves ink may also move the furniture’s dye. Keep the first response controlled and avoid a sequence of household substitutes.

  • Keep the pen, cartridge or product details.
  • Read the complete furniture care label.
  • Stop for dye transfer, spreading or texture change.

In this guide

Identify the ink type

TypeWhat to establish
Ballpoint or gel penPen details, age of the mark and whether it has already been wetted.
Felt-tip or permanent markerWhether the product is actually labelled washable; use the specific felt-tip guide.
Printer inkCartridge details and extent of the spill; avoid spreading liquid through seams.
Unknown inkMaterial assessment before experimenting with products.

For a felt-tip use the dedicated felt-tip guide. We retain it as a distinct task rather than assuming all pen searches need the same answer.

Check the sofa, not just the spotter

W, S, W-S and X narrow the permitted upholstery method; they do not list every safe chemical. The La-Z-Boy: upholstery cleaning letters and restrictions provides an example of the system and further restrictions. Follow your own furniture instructions.

A professional-care circle or a zip on a cushion does not authorise a home solvent or machine wash. See the complete code guide.

First response and permitted local treatment

  1. Blot accessible fresh ink with a plain white absorbent cloth without rubbing.
  2. Check the ink and care instructions before adding water or another chemical.
  3. If a compatible ink spotter is permitted, test it out of sight and inspect after drying.
  4. Use only its stated quantity, contact time and residue-removal method.
  5. Stop for colour transfer, an expanding ring or a changed surface.

Do not apply lemon, bicarbonate, vinegar, baby wipes or alcohol as a universal set of alternatives. Earlier products can also affect the next professional treatment.

Different surfaces need different answers

This guide concerns fabric sofas. For leather use the leather pen-mark guide; for flooring use ink on carpet. Laundry instructions for clothing are outside this upholstery procedure.

Where colour is permanently changed or filling is affected, suitable cleaning may offer only partial improvement. Agree the likely result and scope before the work begins.
