Carpet Burns: Cleaning, Repair or Replacement?

Carpet Burns: Cleaning, Repair or Replacement?

A burn is not always a stain. Heat may discolour, melt or remove fibres, and cleaning cannot recreate the missing material. First decide whether you are looking at loose residue or a structural change before trying to improve the appearance.

  • Let the area cool and address the cause of the incident first.
  • Do not cut, shave or glue the pile as a routine home-cleaning step.
  • Ask for repair advice where fibre is melted, missing or distorted.

ObservationLikely next question
Loose soot or a surface depositCan the residue be safely removed without spreading contamination?
Hard, fused or shortened fibresIs specialist repair feasible? Cleaning will not restore the original fibre.
A hole or damaged backingDoes the affected construction require repair or replacement?
A discoloured patch with no loose residueIs the colour change permanent rather than removable soil?

These observations guide an enquiry; they are not a diagnosis from appearance alone. A larger fire or smoke incident requires appropriate specialist assessment rather than an ordinary stain booking.

Avoid enlarging the damage

Do not trim a loop, scrape a fused patch or cut a square from the fitted carpet to make a repair yourself. Pattern, pile direction, backing and seam construction affect whether a patch is acceptable.

Avoid irons and heated tools. Do not bleach the area to disguise darkening; this can change the surrounding colour and complicate any later work.

Choosing a provider and scope

Send close and wide photographs, identify the heat source and describe what has already been done. Ask explicitly whether the provider offers cleaning, carpet repair or both. Crown’s cleaning service should not be interpreted as a commitment to patching or re-fitting.

For the wider decision about worn or damaged flooring, use the carpet-care and replacement decision guide. Compare likely improvement and cost with repair or replacement before commissioning a clean.

Discuss the appropriate cleaning scope

Ask Crown about removable soil around the affected area and confirm scope first. Structural carpet repair or replacement may require a different provider.
