How to Deal With Blood on a Mattress Without Soaking It

A mattress is not a washable garment. Blood on a removable, washable cover may be treatable through its laundry instructions, while liquid in foam or filling needs a different decision. Start by separating those layers and avoid turning a small surface mark into a wet mattress.
- Use gloves and keep blood-contact cloths separate from ordinary cleaning materials.
- Check which cover, if any, can be removed and washed. A zip alone is not permission.
- Do not apply heat, peroxide or an enzyme recipe to an unidentified mattress core.

Identify the affected layer before treatment
- Remove bedding carefully and read its care label separately from the mattress instructions.
- Check whether the cover is removable and washable, and whether removing it affects a protective barrier.
- Record whether the blood is a small surface mark or has soaked into seams, foam or filling.
- For extensive contamination, unknown-source blood or a setting with infection-control requirements, arrange a suitable specialist assessment.
A remaining stain and a contamination problem are different concerns. Making a mark less visible does not establish that the mattress has been disinfected or is suitable for continued use.
For bedding or a genuinely washable removable cover
American Cleaning Institute: blood on washable fabrics recommends cold water for fresh blood on washable fabrics and warns against hot water setting the stain. That laundry advice applies only where washing is permitted; it is not an instruction to soak the assembled mattress.
- Take the washable item off only as the manufacturer allows. Keep the liquid away from the mattress underneath.
- Use the label-approved wash or pretreatment. Check that any stain product is suitable for the fibre and colour.
- Inspect the item before tumble drying or ironing. Follow the drying label and do not use heat to accelerate stain removal.
- Refit the cover only when both it and the mattress are completely dry.
For a fixed cover or foam mattress
First blot accessible fresh liquid with a plain absorbent cloth, without scrubbing or pressing it deeper. Then check the mattress-specific instructions. If they permit local damp treatment, use only the approved product and minimal application; stop if the mark spreads or colour transfers.
TEMPUR UK: cover care and foam-material restrictions explicitly prohibits washing, sponging, steam cleaning and dry cleaning its TEMPUR Material. This is a concrete example of why a generic mattress recipe cannot be applied to every foam. Its removable-cover instructions are separate.
Do not pour peroxide onto an unknown textile, spread a wet salt or bicarbonate paste, or alternate several cleaners. If treatment is prohibited or contamination has reached the core, ask the manufacturer or an appropriate specialist whether cleaning is feasible.
Allow drying and judge the outcome honestly
Keep the mattress uncovered while any permitted treatment dries, with safe airflow. Do not use an iron, close heater or hot hairdryer to force drying. Surface dryness alone may not reveal moisture in the filling.
Do not sleep on a mattress that remains damp or has unresolved contamination. Persistent odour, a recurring mark or a soaked core warrants further assessment. Cleaning may reduce a stain without removing every trace, and replacement may be the appropriate option for an affected core. See our general mattress-care guide.
Ask for a material-specific cleaning assessment
Before requesting a mattress clean, provide the make, construction, care label and extent of the mark. We must first establish whether the item and contamination are within the service scope.
