Blood Stains on Sofas and Upholstery: What to Do First

For a small household blood mark on a sofa, the first priority is to avoid spreading it or applying a method the upholstery cannot tolerate. The care instructions for the furniture come before a laundry recipe. Leather, suede, fixed fabric and washable covers are different cases.
- Avoid bare-hand contact and use a clean absorbent cloth to blot fresh liquid.
- Do not apply heat or soak fixed upholstery.
- If water cleaning is prohibited, the fabric is unknown or contamination is extensive, stop and arrange suitable advice.

Read the care code before adding water
Check the label under the seat or ask the retailer. W commonly indicates a water-based upholstery spot cleaner; S indicates an appropriate water-free solvent system; W-S allows the specified alternatives; X excludes liquid spot cleaners. These are starting points, not permission to steam-clean, launder or use any household chemical. La-Z-Boy: upholstery cleaning codes gives product-specific code instructions.
On S, X or unknown fabric, avoid a DIY water treatment. Do not assume that “velvet” or “polyester” alone tells you the permitted method: finishes, backing and the complete construction matter. See the upholstery code guide.
For a fresh mark on fabric that permits water-based spot cleaning
- Use gloves and blot fresh liquid with a clean white absorbent cloth. Work locally without rubbing it into a larger area.
- Confirm the permitted product and test it on a hidden area, checking the result after drying.
- If the manufacturer allows a cool-water blotting step, use a lightly dampened cloth rather than pouring water onto the seat. Change cloth sections as they pick up the mark.
- Remove any permitted product only as directed and let the area dry naturally before assessing it. Stop if dye transfers, a ring spreads or the texture changes.
The American Cleaning Institute: blood on washable fabrics recommends cold water for fresh blood on washable fabrics. Its soaking and laundering instructions are for clothing: they should not be copied onto fixed sofa upholstery. A cushion cover may also be non-washable despite having a zip.
If the mark has dried or an earlier attempt failed
Do not scrape hard, add progressively stronger chemicals or saturate the foam. Tell the assessor how old the mark is and which products or heat treatments were used. Those details help distinguish remaining soil from a change caused by previous treatment.
A formulated stain treatment still needs approval for the exact fabric and finish. Even an instruction from a recognised manufacturer may only apply to its own range; the Sunbrella: product-specific stain guidance stain table, for example, is not a universal formula for every sofa.
Avoid default recipes involving peroxide, bleach, ammonia, alcohol or baking-soda paste. A product that alters the colour or finish creates a different problem from the original stain.
Leather, suede and other upholstered furniture
The same issue can occur on a dining chair, headboard or armchair, but the stain’s name does not make the care method transferable. Check the item’s own instructions. Leather and suede require a finish-specific assessment; do not reuse the water-based fabric steps on them.
If the area is heavily contaminated, has entered the filling or needs biological decontamination, arrange a specialist assessment before an ordinary cleaning booking. Describe the contamination honestly so the service can be accepted or referred appropriately.
When to stop and what to send a cleaner
- A clear photograph of the mark and the care label.
- The approximate size, age and whether it reached seams or filling.
- The item’s material if known and every treatment already attempted.
- Any colour transfer, water ring or texture change seen during the attempt.
Stain removal cannot be guaranteed after a fibre, dye or finish has changed. For general maintenance use our upholstery care guide. Blood on a carpet or mattress needs its own material checks.
